A Soldier's Duty
Theirs Not to Reason Why
by Jean Johnson
Ace, $7.99, 422pp
Release Date: July 26, 2011

This begins a new series by the author of The Sons of Destiny series.

Ia is a precog from a heavy world, faster, stronger and psychic. After a vision of the future that showed the devastation of her home galaxy, the time lines showed her a way to prevent it. To do so, she must enlist in the Terran United Planets Marines. Ia must rise through the ranks, influencing the right people etc, all the while preventing her psychic abilities from being revealed. She does enlist the day she turns eighteen on her way to become the soldier [marine] known as Bloody Mary.

Can she save the galaxy?

In this action packed adventure, she gets off to a good detailed start with good characterization and focus. The author has created an entertaining book that saves the reader from boredom. This series looks like a winner if it keeps up with volume one. ~~ Pam Allan
