Magebane
by Lee Arthur Chane
Daw, $7.99, 488 pp
Release Date: October 4, 2011

This appears to be a debut novel.

The kingdom of Evrenfels is the last bastion of magic in the world cut off by the Great Barrier that magic cannot penetrate.

For centuries the mageborn have ruled with a dictatorial hand while on the other side of the barrier, magic is forgotten, and technology has begun. Change is coming. Lord Falk, the most powerful mageborn, plans to take down the barrier and conquer the lands beyond. He only has to assassinate the king and his heir, Prince Karl and Brenna, the true heir to the throne. The one thing he didn't think about is the airship that flies over the barrier unbalancing his careful plot.

An interesting premise with a well realized world, and characters that interest as they face alternative possibilities not to mention action. Makes for an interesting read. I look forward to future work. ~~ Pam Allan
