Prince of Thorns
by Mark Lawrence
Ace, $25.99, 324pp
Release Date: August 2, 2011

This is a debut novel, book one of The Broken Empire series.

At the age of nine, Jorg saw his mother and brother killed in front of him, At thirteen, he led a band of blood thirsty "brothers". By fifteen he return to face his father, only to be faced with treachery and death with dark magic. But he plans to be king at fifteen, and to join the broken empire into a single country. But can a boy beat the dark magic and overwhelming opposition?

This is a revenge fantasy; dark and compelling, difficult to put down and driven by the conflicted but obsessed protagonist and page-to-page action. This will be a series to follow based on the quality of the debut. Lawrence has almost created a sub genre with intensity. Could be an award in its future. ~~ Pam Allan
