White Tiger
by Kylie Chan
Harper, $7.99, 528 pp
Release Date: August 30, 2011

White Tiger is book 1 in the Dark Heavens trilogy. This trilogy first appeared in Australia several years ago and now Americans are finally being let in on this wonderful fantasy series. The second and third books, Red Phoenix and Blue Dragon, will be released in late September and October of this year.

Emma Donahoe is a kindergarten teacher in Hong Kong who teaches English on the side. When she has enough of her job with Miss Kwok’s school she impulsively quits. The father of her favorite private student, Simone Chen, hires her to be Simone’s full time nanny. So far we have what sound like a typical romance: poor teacher, lonely child, widowed father, but things are not what they seem to be.

Mr. Chen is a martial arts teacher and wealthy businessman with secrets Emma can only begin to guess. Knowing that Simone is the target of kidnappers, Emma is not surprised to find a large bodyguard, Leo, always present but what she does not expect is to be drawn into a world of danger, martial arts, myth, demons and ancient gods and dragons. And Mr. Chen is surprised to find that Emma may well be more than she appears.

This book is 500-plus jam packed pages of action, romance, magic and Chinese mythology. I read it in two days and can hardly wait for the next one. Very highly recommended ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
