The Coffee Table Book of Doom
by Steven Appleby and Art Lester
Plume, $20.00, 224pp
Release Date: September 25, 2012
This is a humor book, illustrated by Appleby’s cartoons. Twelve delightful chapters skewer the varieties of end-of-the-world scenarios current in popular culture and mass media. They are categorized as: cosmic, ecological, medical, geophysical, climate change, technological, social and political, religious, philosophical, and personal. The final chapters deal with living with doom, and note that doom – the end of everything – is easier to contemplate than personal death. The pagination starts at 220 and ends at zero, very apt for this kind of book. ~~ Mike Griffin
