The Enchantment Emporium
by Tanya Huff
Penguin, $24.99, 368pp
Release Date: June 2, 2009
Alysha Gale has just been laid off from her museum job when she learns she has inherited her grandmother’s junk store in Calgary . It seems straightforward enough until you factor in her unusual family - the women could best be called witches, the men have some unusual powers and the aunties oversee the entire family; so, with that in mind, it is hardly surprising her grandmother’s junk shop has some unusual clientele as well as some really special merchandise. Throw in a renegade sorcerer, some dragons on the hunt, a leprechaun shop assistant and the everyday entanglements of love, relationships and family squabbles and you have a delightful mix that will keep you turning page after page, eager to see what happens next. While this was initially listed as a stand-alone novel Ms Huff relented and followed it up with a sequel in 2011, The Wild Ways. Hopefully she will not make us wait too long before she brings us yet more adventures with Alysha and her family. Highly recommended ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
