Jane Yellowrock #5 Death's Rival
by Faith Hunter
Roc, $7,99, 336pp
Publication Date: October 2, 2012
I previously reviewed this book here in January 2013 but since I am re-reading the series in order I thought I’d do an updated review.

As a recap, Jane is a shapeshifting skinwalker who can turn into any animal she wants though she shares her body with the soul of a mountain lion, Beast. She walked out of the mountains as a child, with no memory and unable to speak. She grew into an adult, became a vampire hunter killing rogue vampires, until she was hired by a New Orleans vampire to protect them. Now she works for vampires.

We find Jane alone in this book, having become estranged from Molly, her best friend, and losing Rick, her boyfriend, to a curse.

Jane’s boss Leo is facing several problems, a mysterious illness is affecting the vampires and as a result they are looking to a new unknown master for help. With events heading towards a vampire war, Jane, in her position of Leo’s Enforcer, must discover who is the usurper as well as fight off his minions. It seems that there is a traitor within Leo’s forces who is sending information to the enemy. And Leo is no prize himself as he forces Jane to become his Enforcer for real; though unknown to Leo, given time, Beast will be able to break the bond.

Jane assembles her own team - an ex-ranger, Eli Younger, and his younger brother, Alex. The brawn is supplied by Eli while the brains come from Alex who is an expert hacker. The interaction between the two, as well as with Jane, is wonderful.

This installment sees Beast become an even more distinct character while Jane learns more about her skinwalker roots and recovers more memories of her past.

This is a great series and highly recommended. ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
