The Halliana and Doyle families run to adaptors: persons who can take on the forms of other people. Ciel Halligan and three of her four brothers have inherited the ability, and her non-adaptor brother, James the scientist, is at work on figuring out the genetics of why he isn’t, and if it’s possible to activate the latent gene. But when 10-year-old Molly Doyle shows a startlingly precocious turn at shape-shifting, and gets stuck in a very inconvenient form, Ciel and Molly’s brother Billy are thrown together in an escalating comedy of errors edged with deadly danger, just as their families are gearing up for the big annual Come As You Aren’t bash. Ciel’s increasingly strong attraction to Billy is coming at an awkward time, just as Mark, the adaptable secret-agent Ciel has been crushing on since childhood, is finally reciprocating her interest.
Quick Fix can be read with utter delight as a stand-alone, if you haven’t already snagged In a Fix. Either way, Grimes is a wonderful writer, serving up well-penned action-romance with enough panache, humor, and sensuality to charm the pants off her readers that last quite literally if you have a significant other to share with. To further the plot or serve a turn, the author occasionally dumbs her characters down or disregards the laws of probability and physics, but all in a spirit of Puckish fun.
As I’ve said elsewhere, some writers try to be funny, and it’s painful when they fall short. This author gets the gold. I grinned and chortled my way through most of the book, and page 112 has a hilarious (un)quotable description that I shared with family, friends, and random strangers alike, it was so good. If the title is tongue-in-cheekily reflexive, all I can say is, I’m hooked and I want MORE!!!! Even the bio-blurb is funny. ~~ Chris R. Paige
