This is a short horror story with a new take on an old legend, thus it's a short review, since I don't want to give any spoilers away.
Chessup is a day laborer working with a crew to clean up a flooded creek outside of Boulder, Colorado. One day after work, his car battery dies and he sets out to borrow one from a dozer on site to get a jump. While getting the battery, he makes an interesting discovery.
One of his co-workers, Burned Dan, who always keeps his face covered due to burns, arrives as he's hauling it up to his car with the thought of selling it somewhere. Dan offers to buy Chessup's Discovery as well as giving his car a jump, an offer he decides to take.
Dusk is rolling in by this point and a police officer arrives with his gun drawn to investigate what looks like theft at a worksite. While trying to explain to the officer what they are doing, worrying if they will be arrested or shot, they all see something or someone moving up the hill from the creek, where Chessup had made his discovery. Things get crazy and Chessup's world turns upside down and is forever changed from that point in time...
I enjoyed this story and wished it was a longer read. The author keeps you engaged and writes a good story. I'd recommend it. I'll be looking out for more of his work in the future. ~~ Dee Astell
