Visions Cainsville #2
by Kelley Armstrong
Dutton, $16.00, 464pp
Published: July 2015

Olivia Taylor-Jones, daughter of notorious serial killers, has just taken refuge in the secluded town of Cainsville when she finds a dead woman—dressed to look like Olivia—in her car. When the body vanishes, she convinces herself it’s just another omen. But then she learns a troubled young woman with connections to Cainsville went missing just days ago—the same woman Olivia found dead in her car. With the help of her recent and unlikely ally, Gabriel Walsh, Olivia sets out to uncover the truth, but her efforts place her in the crosshairs of old and powerful forces.

Olivia has briefly returned to her adoptive parents’ home in Chicago to collect some clothes and personal items. As she gets ready to leave, she find a body in her car; a dead woman dressed to look like her, but when Gabriel arrives the body is gone. Assuming it is one of her hallucinations, one of the omens she sees, she sees posters for a missing woman with ties to Cainsville and she recognizes her as the dead woman in her car. As she and Gabriel investigate, it becomes more and more clear that there is something different about Cainsville and the people in it, something otherworldly. As Olivia learns more and more about the people there as well as her past and links to the town she is also plagued by her ex-fiancee who is determined to resume their engagement.

We are learning more about Olivia, Gabriel, Ricky, and more importantly, the people and secrets of Cainsville. Opposing forces, dark vs light, are vying to win Olivia.  It is clear James is being influenced by one faction, though which one is not yet clear.  The story moves along quickly and draws the reader headlong into the action. I cannot wait to dive into book three. Highly recommended ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
