We Burned So Bright
by TJ Klune
Tor, $25.99, 176pp
Publish date April 2026

The road stretched out before them. No other cars, just the headlights on the blacktop. Above, the cracked moon in a kaleidoscope sky….

Husbands Don and Rodney have lived a good long life. Together they've experienced the highest highs of love and family, and lows so low that they felt like the end of the world.

Now, the world is ending for real. A rogue black hole is coming for Earth and in a month everything and everyone they've ever known will be gone.

Suddenly, after 40 years together, Don and Rodney are out of time. They're in a race against the clock to make it from Maine to Washington State to take care of some unfinished business before it's all over.

On the road they meet those who refuse to believe death is coming and those who rush to meet it. But there are also people living their final days as best they know how-impromptu weddings, bright burning bonfires, shared meals, and new friends.

And as the black hole draws near, among ball lightning and under a cracked moon in a kaleidoscope sky, Don and Rodney will look back on their lives and ask if their best was good enough.

Is it enough to burn bright if nothing comes from the ashes?

We Burn So Bright by TJ Klune is an emotional journey, full of beauty, heartbreaking moments but also triumphant love and a book that combines apocalyptic world ending times with a family drama. The novel is so evocative with language, stirring up ideas about love and family and also imparting the rich history of LGBTQIA culture. The title is perfect for this story, it burns bright and beautiful.

The story tracks Don and Rodney's journey as they race against the clock to complete unfinished business before it’s too late. And in a world where everyone is dying, Don and Rodney live so brightly and love so much. The landscape of this book is so detailed and rich that all I can do is recommend reading it. It is all about love and family with characters that will sweep you up into their end time.

If you like apocalyptic stories, or stories about family love, this novel is for you. TJ Klune has created a masterpiece of love, an emotional journey of sweeping proportions and a story that shares what each individual might do if the world was coming to an end. This is one book, with one journey. It is gorgeous and sad all at the same time.

Rating: 5 out of 5 boxes. ~~ Andrea Rittschof
