Girl Genius Omnibus Volume One: Agatha Awakens
by Phil & Kaja Foglio
Tor, $34.99, 320pp
Release Date: February 28, 2012

Girl Genius is the multiple Hugo Award–winning steampunk webcomic by Phil and Kaja Foglio. The story in this volume was originally published in Girl Genius comics #1thru #10.

Agatha Clay dreams of being a scientist which is why she is a student at Transylvania Polygnostic University . But she seems to be doomed to be just a lowly minion because she has trouble concentrating. Then her locket is stolen and it looks like Agatha may have “the Spark” after all. She catches the attention of Baron Klaus Wulfenbach and his handsome son. When the University is overthrown and a mechanical monster is on the loose Agatha finds herself in the Baron’s Airship City in the midst of all the intrigue.

This is a wonderful introduction to the series. The art is deserving of its multiple Eisner Award nominations and the storytelling is wonderful. I will be looking forward to future Omnibus volumes and will collect them all. Highly recommended. ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
