Tharg's Creepy Chronicles
by Mark Millar and others
Rebellion/Simon & Schuster, $20, 144pp
Release Date: October 9, 2012
A collection of ten macabre stories from 2000AD magazine, which were first serialized in 1980-2010. For the newbies, this is the most well-known British science fiction comic book, which has carried Judge Dredd. Most of these tales are not of that future, just scary stories set in our present, or the alien Tales of Telguuth. Supernatural twists abound, but nothing so cliched as zombies or vampires. For example, an alternate past set in 1967 San Francisco has psychedelic superheroes fighting the legions of the Lizard King, owing a lot to the Dr Strange comics of the time. As per the EC Comics tradition, the stories are introduced by the editor of 2000AD, Tharg the Mighty, a space alien from Betelgeuse. ~~ Mike Griffin
