There's a Beach in My Bedroom
by Kevin & Danielle Jonas
Illustrated by Courtney Dawson
Ages 4-8
Razorbill, $18.99, 40pp
Published: July 2023

This picture book is aimed at 4-8 year-olds.

Bella is super excited when she wakes up Sunday morning, since it's family beach day, and she starts going over a list in her mind of all the fun things she will be doing at the beach with her family. There is only one tiny problem - it's raining outside - but that doesn't deter her, since nothing can ruin family beach day. It will just have to stop raining.

Bella gets ready and rushes down to join the family in her beach attire, since her family always gets an early start, but something wasn't right. Nobody else was ready to go. Her mother tells her she's sorry but it's raining, so no beach day. Bella is still sure it'll clear up until her father says, not according to the weather report. Bella laments that it's not fair, to which her mom replies that sometimes things aren't fair.

The family tries to tell Bella that they can still have fun at home, playing games or story time or having a jam session, but all Bella wants is to go to the beach and runs off before her family sees her cry.

Bella knows it's no one's fault but, for now, she's feeling sad as she cries with her teddy bear. Then there's a knock on her door and in walks mom, dad and her sister Emma, all decked out for the beach. They tell her that they know she was really disappointed that they couldn't go to the beach, so they were going to bring the beach to her, in her bedroom.

Bella is very skeptical that bedroom beach day won't be the same, but seeing that her family went to all this trouble to try to make her happy, made her feel less sad and willing to give it a try.

Bella's family shows her that bedroom beach day can be just as special when shared together.

I read this book to my four-year-old grandson. He enjoyed the bright and colorful pictures, which held his attention while I was reading him the story.  ~~ Dee Astell
