My granddaughter introduced me to this series by reading me the second book. I was so impressed with the writing and wonderful illustrations that I went out and found the first one so that I could begin the series from the very start.
The story begins with Duncan, who went to take out his crayons in class one day but found a stack of letters, addressed to him, from his crayons.
Overall, they are frazzled and have had enough, basically telling him they quit. There's one from Red Crayon feeling overworked, since he feels he had been used the most this year, as hearts and Santas and fire trucks all require a lot of red coloring. There's one from Purple Crayon, who is going to completely lose it if Duncan doesn't start coloring inside the lines when using him. Blue wants a break because, as Duncan's favorite color, he's now short and stubby and can't see over the railing in the crayon box. Black wants to be used for more than just outlining. And Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking, because each believes that he's the true color of the sun and try to point that out by stating examples of when and where they were each used for that fact.
Duncan wants to make his crayons happy so he gets an idea that might help the situation...
As the first book, this is a wonderful beginning to an original and very engaging series of books. I very much recommend it for the young readers in your life. ~~ Dee Astell
