What Do We Know About the Roswell Incident?
Hardback Edition
by Ben Hubbard (Author), Who HQ (Author), Andrew Thomson (Illustrator)
Series: What Do We Know About?
Reading age: 8-12 years
Penguin Workshop, $6.99, 112pp
Published: March 2023

"The What Do We Know About?” series explores the mysterious, the unknown, and the unexplained, made understandable for younger readers with an interest in the story."

In 1947, an unusual object crashed into the New Mexico desert and was recovered by Roswell Army Airfield officers. A few days later, the Roswell Daily Record newspaper carried this front page headline: "RAAF captures flying saucer on ranch in Roswell region".

The residents were shocked and before the day was out, they and the world wanted to know more. The sheriff's office, the military and local newspapers and radio stations were swamped with calls from all over America and beyond. Reporters from far and wide were sent to Roswell to investigate but, within twenty-four hours, everything changed.

The next morning the Roswell Morning Dispatch published a new front page story: "Army debunks Roswell's flying disk as world simmers with excitement". Many folks were suspicious of the new story about the object being a weather balloon that crashed during a thunderstorm.

Thus begins the mystery surrounding the Roswell Incident.

This book covers all the firsthand accounts, as well as the various theories that were rampant during 1947. It goes over which stories, pictures and videos have been debunked over the years, as well as detailing things that no-one has been able to prove either way. There are former presidents who have read the files and swear that there were no extraterrestrials found in Roswell.

I have enjoyed the What Do We Know About? series. This is the third book from it that I've read and I look forward to reading more. They have all been engaging for young and old alike and, even if you know about a topic, you might be surprised to find out facts or information that you didn't until you read the book.

The illustrations are engaging and well-spaced throughout the story. One of my favorite aspects of the series are the timelines included at the end of each book. In this case, the incident timeline begins in 1947 and runs until 2021, with an equivalent timeline of world events on the next page for comparison.

This is a good series to share with those young curious minds in your life and this is a worthy addition to it. ~~ Dee Astell
