‘Your Pal Fred: Low Power’ is the sequel to "Your Pal Fred" and is a graphic novel aimed at 7- to 10-year-old readers.
This book starts off with everyone having heard of Fred and his way of solving problems and helping enemies become friends.
On this one particular night, it seems that there is strife all over and Fred's help is needed everywhere. Unfortunately, Fred seems to be off his game as he's having glitching issues that make it hard for him to concentrate and help those in need.
After a disaster lands him in a river of muck, his old friend Wormy pulls him free and offers to lend a hand, at which point Fred realizes his problem is low power. His rechargable battery is running down and he needs the sun to recharge. The problem is that, in this post-apocalyptic world, with the sky so full of pollution and gunk, Fred barely gets any charge from the little bit of sun that sneaks through.
After explaining the situation to Wormy, his friend thinks she has a solution. She will take him to SunTop, the city where the sun can be seen.
After arriving in the city, they find out two things: one, you can only ascend to the top to see the Sun if you leave an offering to Mother Sun; and two, the city is under nightly attack. Fred's skills would be highly beneficial to help counter these attacks.
Can Fred solve the problem and keep the garbage-like Trash creatures from stealing food and people from the city before he runs out of energy?
I really enjoyed this book. I found it a rich story full of new and interesting characters, along with a return for Wormy, whose story I felt wasn't complete in the first book.
The illustrations are fun and colorful, keeping the reader’s attention on the pictures as well as the story.
This is an awesome series full of silly wonder and positive messages, for kids of all ages. I truly look forward to reading book three, which was released earlier this year. ~~ Dee Astell
