The Bughouse Affair
Carpenter & Quincannon #1
by Marcia Muller & Bill Pronzini
Forge, $14.99, 269pp
Publication Date: November 12, 2013
This is the first in a new series of delightful historical mysteriesby husband and wife team Marcia Muller and Bill Pronzini. Set in
San Francisco
just before the 20th century, we follow two former Pinkerton agents turned private detective as they solve what, at first, appears to be two distinctly different cases. Sabrina Carpenter has been hired to find a lady pickpocket who is victimizing patrons at the local amusement park while her partner John Quincannon is looking for a burglar who seemingly targets the clients of one particular insurance company. Their cases take them to such diverse areas of the city as
Chutes
Amusement Park
, the
Barbary Coast
and the Tenderloin. To add to the complexity of the cases, a man claiming to be the detective Sherlock Holmes, back from the dead at
Reichenbach
Falls
, inserts himself into the case to “help.” Two murders and several serious crimes later, our detectives find their cases have merged and, in spite of Sherlock’s help, they reach a solution.
This was an enjoyable read, the characters are well-rounded and believable and the city is described in a vivid fashion making the past come alive. I look forward to the next in the series. ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
