The Illusion of Murder
by Carol McCleary
Forge, $7.99, 496pp
Publication Date: February 28, 2012
Second in the Nellie Bly series, this outing finds our intrepid Nellie on a trip around the world when Jules Verne challenges her to beat his fictional hero’s eighty-day trip. While her publisher, Joseph Pulitzer, believes it much too risky for Nellie , she forges ahead anyway. Things may be a little more dicey than Nellie planned, however, after she witnesses a murder in
Egypt
and the killer apparently is following her on her trip.
The real Nellie Bly did take a trip around the world in order to write Around the World in 72 Days and Ms. McCleary uses this trip as the basis for a murder mystery. This outing is a bit slow in the beginning but picks up the pace as Nellie reaches
America
and the ending is satisfactory. A wonderful blending of fiction with historical events and persons. I look forward to the next book in the series. ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
