A Stranger in Town
Rockton/Casey Duncan #6
by Kelley Armstrong
Minotaur, $27.99, 368pp
Published: February 9, 2021

In the next riveting thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong, the paranoia increases – along with the stakes – as the town of Rockton tries to solve the latest mystery at their door.

Detective Casey Duncan has noticed fewer and fewer residents coming in to the hidden town of Rockton, and no extensions being granted. Her boyfriend, Sheriff Eric Dalton, presumes it’s the natural flux of things, but Casey’s not so sure. It seems like something bigger is happening in the small town they call home.

When an injured hiker stumbles from the woods, someone who seems to have come to the Yukon for a wilderness vacation but instead is now fighting for her life, it’s all hands on deck. What – or who – attacked this woman, and why?

With the woman unconscious, and no leads, Casey and Eric don’t know where the threat is coming from. Plus, the residents of their deeply secretive town are uneasy with this stranger in their midst. Everyone in Rockton wants this mystery solved – and fast.

Things are changing in Rockton and maybe not for the better. Fewer new people are coming in and more residents are leaving which may signal the end of Rockton altogether but, of course, the council is giving no answers. Compounding the situation is the severely injured tourist that is found in the forest and, then later, the bodies of her companions and finally the bodies of a settler family all apparently attacked and killed by hostiles. As Casey and Dalton investigate the murders it becomes clear that the answer lies in the real origin of the hostiles and that he answers may lead them, and Rockton, to conclusions no one is ready for.

We finally learn a lot more about the origins of the hostiles as well as the pasts of some of the First Settlement leaders and Rockton resident Petra. The action is quick and pulls the reader along to a conclusion that also leaves us with a cliff-hanger ending - will Rockton survive? The whole series has been building to the conclusion that we will get in the seventh and final book in the series, The Deepest Secrets, which I am about to dive into.  These characters and this world are engrossing and intriguing and while I am eager for the answers Casey has been searching for since her arrival I also worry about which characters will, or won’t, make the cut to the sequel series. Highly recommended ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
