This Fallen Prey
Rockton/Casey Duncan #3
by Kelley Armstrong
Minotaur, $25.99, 368pp
Published: February 6, 2018

When Casey first arrived at the off-the-grid town, an isolated community built as a haven for people running from their pasts, she had no idea what to expect, with no cell phones, no internet, no mail, and no way of getting in or out without the town council’s approval. She certainly didn’t expect to be the homicide detective on two separate cases or to begin a romantic relationship with her boss. But the very last thing she expected was for the council to drop a dangerous criminal into their midst without a plan to keep him imprisoned, and to keep others safe.

Of course Oliver Brady claims he's being set up. But the longer Brady stays in town, the more things start to go wrong. When evidence comes to light that someone inside Rockton might be working as his accomplice, helping him to escape, Casey races to figure out who exactly Brady is and what crimes he’s truly responsible for committing.

In the next page-turning entry in Kelley Armstrong’s gripping series, life in Rockton is about to get even more dangerous.

Rockton is a hidden town populated by people who have reason to go into hiding. Some are victims and some are criminals but none are quite like the latest arrival, Oliver Brady who is either a victim or a sociopathic serial killer. Unlike the other residents he has been sent to Rockton to be incarcerated for a six-month period while his step-father makes other arrangements to isolate him from society.  Casey and Dalton are not happy to have Oliver there and neither are the other residents with some thinking he needs to be “tried and executed” while others feel keeping him locked up all the time is wrong. Toss in a couple of attempts on Oliver’s life to confuse the issue and then Oliver escapes with help from one of Rockton’s residents. The race is on to find Oliver, identify his accomplice and determine what to do with a serial killing sociopath who may be an innocent victim.

The action here is a few months after the events of the last book. Casey has settled in a bit more and her relationship with Eric is on firmer ground.  The plot is wonderfully tense - is Oliver a killer or is he a victim that they should be helping, who is his accomplice and who is trying to kill him. We learn more about Eric’s past and more about several of Rockton’s residents.  I am moving on to the next book immediately as this one ends with a bit of a cliffhanger for Rockton’s future. Highly recommended ~~ Stephanie L Bannon
