An Oral History of Atlantis
Short story collection
by Ed Park
Random House, $28.00, 203pp
Published July 2025

I do have a fondness for the absurd and I’m game to read experimental stuff; but this collection left me wanting.  The dustjacket warmed me up with the promise that the stories were written by a Pulitzer Prize finalist – but he didn’t win, did he?

I will own that I do not appreciate poetry; to my literal mind, poetry does little to satisfy my need for a beginning, a middle and an end.  I’m wondering if someone with a more poetic-bent would find more to appreciate in this collection.

I found the stories to be disjointed, incoherent and usually incomplete.  I read a great deal about the author’s brilliance and wit.  I could see an acerbic wit in some of the stories but too little within a façade and which added nothing to the story.

And more to the point for me:  I usually read and review within the genre of science fiction and fantasy. I guess I imagined that some of the stories would be germane but none of them were.  ~~  Catherine Book
