Frozen is obviously a new generation of Disney.  It does not follow the standard Princess plot; maybe Disney is taking a clue from Barbie.  Time to grow up and portray females as capable and strong.

Two princess sisters, one of them has a beauteous and terrible secret.  And when an unthinkable accident happens to the younger sister, Anna, the older sister, Elsa, is schooled by her parents to hide and deny her power.  Elsa has the power to freeze anything but she has no control over it.  She lives in terror that she might, one day, again hurt her little sister.   When their parents die, Elsa sees to it that the castle remains closed so that no one has the opportunity to find out her secret.  Anna grows up lonely and confused; wondering what happened to her loving sister who now shuts her out.

Then comes Coronation Day when Elsa officially takes over as Queen.  Anna sees this as an opportunity to meet other people and maybe her true love.  But it all goes disastrously wrong when Anna challenges Elsa’s decisions.  Elsa’s terrible power is revealed and the kingdom wants her head.  But when her power goes out of control Elsa decides it’s best that she leave so no one gets hurt.  Unfortunately, the damage is already done and eternal winter descends upon the kingdom.  Anna tries to find and reason with her sister but that doesn’t go well either. 

In true old-Disney fashion, Anna finds her true love.  And I knew, as I watched, that this story was going to twist that somehow.  And I thought I knew which boy was her true love and which one was going to love Elsa.  I thought I could see it coming as to how Anna and the kingdom would be saved.  But new-Disney really threw me for a loop.  And while I’m all about strong, capable females, I am so inculcated with the Disney Princess-true love saves the day (i.e. the man saves the day) that I didn’t really see it coming.

This was a gorgeous eye-candy of a movie.  The animation of each character was so beautiful.  The icy winter scenes were breathtaking.  I watched it in 3D and while it added depth to the movie, it did not attempt to shock.  It was just one of the most beautiful animated movies I’ve ever seen.  And the ending?  Oh no, I’m not giving anything more away.  You’ll have to hear it elsewhere….or experience it yourself. ~~  Catherine Book
