Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Stars: Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson
Directors: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo
Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 136 minutes
In theaters: April 4, 2014

This was just plain fun!  ‘Course I’m an long-time comics fan and I loved the Cpt America comics.  I also adored the Black Widow so was thrilled they used her character so much.

Steve Rogers is still trying to figure out how to fit into the contemporary times in which he now finds himself.  Natasha, aka Black Widow, keeps trying to set him up on dates.  He meets a fellow runner while out jogging and develops a friendship which comes in handy when he calls on the man for help.  It turns out this guy was part of a program testing some flying wings and he just so happens to know where a pair is stored and so The Falcon is born.  That part went by really fast –don’t blink –I guess because this wasn’t a Falcon movie.
Everything starts falling apart when Nick Fury shows up in Cap’s living room, badly wounded.  He presses a flashdrive into Cap’s hand and warns him not to trust anyone.  Cap knows Shield has been compromised and he can’t be sure how high it goes.  He can’t even trust Natasha once he knows she lied to him on a mission.  But the two of them mend that bridge and began hunting down the answers.  The plot is fast and there isn’t much chance for a breath.
I enjoyed the complexity of the plot, which didn’t confuse me –always a plus.
I’d heard of the spoiler so I knew why the identity of The Winter Soldier was going to challenge Cap.  I expect we’ll see more of that in the next Cpt America movie.  At least, I hope so.
I’m also pleased at the cross-over between this movie and the current episodes of the TV series “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”  I don’t know of any other instances of such a thing happening.  I think that’s pretty cool.  The episode “Turn, Turn, Turn” that aired on April 8, 2014 actually showed a couple clips from the movie.
Chris Evans is a perfect Cap.  He displays just the right amount of ‘boy scout’ quality while still demonstrating that he’s growing and becoming more sophisticated.  The continuing high quality of Marvel movies impresses me.  So many times sequels fail to live up to the first movie; but Marvel’s movies just keep getting better.  So as long as the movies also impress audiences, who didn’t grow up with comics, I’m sure there will be more.  I’m hopeful that Marvel (and Stan Lee) will keep satisfying. ~~ Catherine Book
