Donations for Homeless Children
The Thomas J. Pappas schools were founded in 1989 to provide equitable and accessible education for homeless children. They are committed to providing a comprehensive educational experience, as well as meeting the social and physical needs of their students. They currently support an elementary and middle school in Phoenix, and an elementary school in Tempe.
At each Phoenix-area convention at which WesternSFA is present there will be a special donation box near Fan Table area. We will be collecting books to distribute to homeless children. This donation will place a book directly into the hands of a homeless child for them to keep. This is not a thrift store or a library. The age ranges vary, but we would particularly like to see juvenile fiction. Please take some time to clear your shelves and closets of unneeded books and help a child.
We will take anything you bring - if you donate adult fiction, we have an agreement with a local bookseller to exchange adult fiction for juvenile fiction. So keep an eye out for the big Harry Potter donation box.
Our planned 2006 convention schedule includes
AniZona 2 - April 14-16, 2006
LepreCon 33 - May 5-7, 2006
Nebula Awards - May 5-7, 2006
Phoenix ConGames - July 27-30, 2006
CopperCon 26 - September 1-4, 2006
HexaCon 16 - October 13-15, 2006
In addition to books, the school children need a variety of items which WesternSFA is willing to collect and deliver. For those of you attending our local covnentions, those little bottles of shampoo and lotion that hotels provide are a great donation item *grin*
