Death's Daughter
Children of the Old Ones #1
by S. A. Barnes
Bramble, $29.99, 400pp
Published: May 2026

After a lifetime of chaos, Jocasta has finally found her home with good friends, great classes, even a messy situationship with her former TA-a normal life.

Well, as normal a life as the only child of Death can have.

She's always refused to embrace her father's legacy. Instead of taking lives, she feeds on her classmates' disappointments, failures, and rejections. Finals week has her feasting, and all is good.

Until Death ruins her life. Again.

Without warning, Death names Jocasta as his sole successor, making her a powerful ally… and a massive target. Devon, a descendant of Lust, claims to want to help her-for a price.

Jo will do anything to protect the people she loves and the life she's worked so hard for.

Even if it means becoming a monster.

Death's Daughter by S. A. Barnes has creative worldbuilding and a fantastic character that will pull you right into the story. Jocasta is intriguing in her reluctant role as the daughter of death. I also like the way that the story jumps right into the action. The paranormal aspects are a unique twist on old ideas, feeling completely fresh and new.

I like how Jocasta wants to be normal and is dragged into protecting her friends. I also enjoyed the complexity of the relationships, the triangle of romantic leads and ultimately how Jocasta figures out a solution to the current problem. The resolution of the novel is solid but also leaves an opening for more books set in the world and with the character.

If you like paranormal action books, this is a great start to a series. It has creative worldbuilding with unique details and a different perspective on death and love, including the potential abilities. The relationships are complex and the story has an impactful ending that makes me want to come back for more.

Rating: 5 out of 5 kisses ~~ Andrea Rittschof
