I wish I loved this. The reviews tend to be glowing and from some serious names in the genre. But it just didn't land with me.
Gotchimus is a well-dressed barbarian (not sure why he's still considered a barbarian) who is at home in a cozy tea shoppe sharing a cuppa. He and a sometime rival(?) are sharing a cup and swapping stories of their respective injuries. In the course of the story, we discover that Gotchimus is out to kill all wizards to avenge his dead brother.
The prose is stilted and intended to be humorous. The language is funny but the delivery falls flat for me. If the author intended to field a book that is completely written in hyperbole, then he succeeded.
There is plenty of weirdness and unexpected magic. The plot, such as it is, is simply to give Gotchimus an opportunity to meet and kill one particular wizard. But what Gotchimus believes to be the truth isn't exactly that. He'll have to decide if he'll believe his own memory and experiences or the lies of a wizard.
The end came too quickly, I didn't feel an emotional connection. The author didn't prepare me enough but that's a common issue with a novella. ~~ Catherine Book
