Iron Druid Chronicles #9
by Kevin Hearne
Del Rey, $27.00, 235 pages
Published: July 2017

This is a delightful little collection of nine short stories set in Hearne’s Iron Druid universe.

The points of view vary from Atticus to Granuaile to Archdruid Owen.  There’s even one narrated by Perun, God of Thunder, that is so way whacked, I hesitate to describe past one phrase:  Cuddle Dungeon.  And, yes, it does involve lots of black leather and chains but it does have a serious outcome on his relationship with Flidais.

The stories range from amusing to nostalgic to cautionary.  There are demons and vampires.  And lots and lots of interactions with Elementals – which is always way fun.  Even Loki makes an off-camera appearance.  We finally learn how Owen first met Atticus.  Oberon figures heavily in many of the stories, as some are told to him directly.  So, of course, there is a poodle.  References are made to squirrels but nothing is resolved regarding their insidious nature or plans to take over the world….I was kinda hoping for that. And it ends with sausage and gravy…of course.

If you’re needing an Atticus ‘fix’, this might do the trick although it is pretty light fare. I much enjoyed it.  ~~ Catherine Book
