We’re back with Ms. Thorne’s delightful sapphic lovers, the Arcandor Kianthe and the former Queen’s guardsman Reyna, founders of the New Leaf Tomes and Tea, their bookstore/tea shop in the town of Tawney.
They get a job for the arrogant diarn Arlon (sort of director, head of a duchy sort of), whose territory is the Nacean river; to capture/put out of commission the pirate Serina who has been harrying his river traffic and messing with his profit. But of course, it isn’t that simple. The constable Bobbie has been trying to stop her, but what is stopping Bobbie is she’s madly in love with Serina…and it’s a while before folks figure that out.
But Serina is not the only pirate on the river. There is also the elusive infamous Dastardly Pirate Dreggs with a not only bigger reputation but a bigger ship.
There’s lots of dodging and piratical confrontations on land and river. Finally, the two couples get together to launch their own ship, The Knot for Sail and aggressively seek out Dreggs.
Oh, and Kianthe and Reyna are still looking for the three lost dragon’s eggs from the previous novel.
I really enjoyed the fact that all the pirate shenanigans take place on a river instead of the wide open sea. It makes the story more concise and the adventures tidy. As the cover says: this is A Cozy Fantasy Where Love Sets Sail.
If you liked the first book: this will certainly be your cup of tea. ~~ Sue Martin
